Matterdaddy was a hardware company I started with a friend. The product was a game controller for the PC that enabled you to use it in your left hand while still using the mouse in your right hand thereby obviating the need to use a keyboard while playing stressful first person shooters.
I ripped apart several different controllers to build a working prototype to test with customers recruited off of Craigslist.
I worked with Plasticine/modeling clay to from ergonomics shapes based on measurements from my old human factors books from college.
We employed a third party industrial design and prototyping company to help us in forming a 3D printed model.
We then needed a windows app to configure the controller and share button/keyboard mappings through a cloud based service that we wrote.
We put the product on Kickstarter and managed to raise close to $45,000, but short of our goal.
In all it was a good experience, not a great experience... just a good one.
